Hunter & Regan's Romantic Sunset Proposal at Windsor Club's Private Beach in Orchid Island

Some moments only happen once, and a surprise proposal is one of them.

Hunter reached out with a plan to propose to Regan, his long-term girlfriend. The location he chose was on the private beach at Windsor Club in Orchid Island. The location couldn't have been more fitting—quiet, secluded, and framed by sea oats, soft sand, and the warm golden light that makes Orchid Island so beautiful in the evening.

Like every successful surprise proposal, the biggest challenge wasn't photography—it was staying hidden.

I arrived early and blended in as just another beachgoer, reading a book, and keeping my camera tucked away while Hunter and Regan made their way down the beach. Hunter looked sharp in a classic blue blazer paired with khaki pants, while Regan wore a flowing long-sleeve floral dress that fluttered beautifully. As they walked toward the water, I lowered my book and pulled out my camera, waiting for the perfect moment.

Then it happened.

Hunter dropped to one knee. I began snapping away. After a brief moment of surprise, excitement, and a very enthusiastic "yes," I stood up from my hiding spot to capture the celebration that followed.

Those first few minutes after a proposal are always some of my favorites. The nerves disappear, and couples get to simply enjoy the excitement together. There are genuine smiles, laughter, happy tears, and that unmistakable feeling of "What just happened?"

After giving them a few moments to soak everything in, we spent the rest of the short session taking a few engagement portraits around Windsor Club's charming beach access boardwalk and staircase. The weathered wood, coastal vegetation, and soft evening light created an elegant backdrop that perfectly complemented the timeless feel of their session.

Despite only being a small 25 minute session, there was no rushing and no complicated posing—just the excitement of being newly engaged and enjoying one of the happiest evenings of their lives together.
